Black and white file photo -- Although accounts vary, the last full-blooded Wyandot Indian living in Ohio is believed to have been Bill Moose, a resident of the Franklin County Home who died in 1937 shortly before his 100th birthday. THIS IS AN PHOTO OF BILL MOOSE IN 1934. (Walter D. Nice collection photo, Columbus Dispatch)

Bill Moose, also known as Indian Bill Moose, is regarded as the last full-blooded Wyandot Indian living in central Ohio. He was born in 1837 and died just two months shy of his 100th birthday.

His family had chosen not to leave Ohio when the last of the Indians moved on to Kansas and Oklahoma in 1843. As a teenager, he was sent to Philadelphia to be educated for three years. He worked in various places doing outdoor labor, and lived on the land, sleeping under trees because he loved being close to nature. He traveled to other countries as part of the Sells Bros. Circus. For 15 years, he lived in a shack at the corner of Indianola and Morse roads, before spending his last few years at the Franklin County Home.
